ATTRACTIONS
Zakynthos Island, with its picturesque villages, perched on mountains or by the sea, protected areas of unimaginable natural beauty, unique monuments, churches and castles, is proud for its countless attractions that impress its visitors. View below the most important of them, make a plan to go sightseeing and let yourself discover the nature, culture and history of the charming island of Zakynthos.
National Marine Park
The National Marine Park of Zakynthos, which is the first Park in Greece and the Mediterranean to protect the loggerhead sea turtle (also called Caretta-Caretta), impresses visitors of all ages who flock to visit it. It is an area of invaluable ecological value that belongs to the Natura 2000 network of protected areas and it includes the beaches where sea turtles lay their eggs, the marine area and the islets of Laganas Bay and their coastal zone, as well as the wetland of Lake Keri, Marathonisi and the Strofades Islands.
Bochali Village
Wander the narrow streets of this small but extremely picturesque village, located on the top of Akrotiri village, at the southern part of the island. Enjoy the panoramic view of the port, Argasi village and Laganas bay - especially at sunset or in the evening, when the view is breathtaking. It is worth visiting the chapel of Zoodochos Pigi with its Byzantine icons and the green pine forest where the Venetian Fortress is located.
Local Wineries
With a rich history and a strong presence in the winery, Zakynthos, with 19,000 acres of vineyards and over 60 different varieties, is famous for its good wine. Organize a visit to a Zakynthian winery, taste the local wine varieties, buy local wines, discuss with winemakers, get to know the enchanting world of wine, and you will get the most characteristic taste of Zakynthos through a unique experience.
Agios Dionysios Church
The Church of Agios Dionysios (the patron saint of Zakynthos) is located on the port and is the largest church in the city, with its bell tower 40 meters high being the trademark of the island. Visit the church to see the impressive interior with the wood-carved iconostasis, marble columns, stained glass windows, hall with gold plated iconostasis and silver casket where the relic of Saint Dionysios is kept. The two processions of the sacred relic of the Saint - 24th August and 17th December - are of great importance for the locals, while crowds of people flock for pilgrimage and the three-day celebrations and festivals.
BEACHES
Navagio, Gerakas, Marathonisi, Agios Sostis and the Blue Caves are just some of the most beautiful beaches of Zakynthos, famous for their turquoise waters, beautiful sandy beaches and remarkable formations created by nature in cliffs and caves. Some of them are quiet and peaceful, others touristy and noisy, but it is certain that each beach has a unique beauty that makes holidays truly dreamy.
Navagio (Shipwreck) beach
The most famous, most photographed beach of the island and one of the most impressive landscapes in Greece, Navagio Beach is probably the biggest tourist attraction of Zakynthos that you just have to visit. Accessible by boat, speedboat or excursion boat, it attracts crowds of people that want to see the phenomenon of the shipwrecked ship on the sandy shore and be overwhelmed by the breathtaking landscape of the steep cliffs.
Gerakas beach
The most southern beach of the island and one of the most beautiful, is the exotic Gerakas beach, which covers kilometers of warm sand and its clear blue waters make you want to swim for hours. On this beach, known for the nesting of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta-Caretta), from May to October one can observe the hatching of eggs and how baby turtles try to approach the sea. Since the beach belongs to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and is protected, the tourist facilities and the entrance half an hour before sunset up to half an hour after sunrise are forbidden.
Marathonisi Island
A small, uninhabited island in the bay with the loggerhead sea turtles, very close to the beach of Lake Keri, which you can visit by private boat or as part of an organized boat excursion. You can choose between the pebble beach, which you can reach by swimming, snorkeling in a huge cave or just relaxing and enjoying the sun on the sandy beach. Since the beach is protected, it is advisable to go organized, taking water and snacks with you.
Blue Caves
The Blue Caves, one of the most famous natural attractions of Zakynthos, promise you the most beautiful dives of your life. They are geological formations that have created a series of impressive caves on the northwest coast of the island, from Agios Nikolaos village up to Skinari Cape. The Blue Caves, which are named after the reflections of the water inside of them, are accessible either by a small boat or by swimming if you are an experienced swimmer or diver. The experience and the landscape are unforgettable!
SEA SPORTS
If you are the type of person who enjoys holidays only when practicing your favorite sport or if the natural beauties and sea of Zakynthos inspire you to try a new sport, then you have come to the right place. On the island you will easily find the right places for your favorite sport, sports equipment stores and training schools for beginners, children and adults.
Scuba Diving
Zakynthos, with its clear waters, magnificent seabed and rich underwater world, has fairly become the favorite destination of divers in the Mediterranean. Diving in beautiful caves, water passages and rock formations, with unexpected encounters with sea turtles and seals, is transformed from a water sport into a heavenly experience. If you want to dive into the deep turquoise waters but do not have the appropriate experience, you will find many scuba diving schools to take lessons and with the right equipment to take you by boat or speedboat to dreamy landscapes.
Sea kayaking
Sea kayaking lovers are well aware that Zakynthos is one of the best destinations for their favorite sport, thanks to its windless and peaceful sea and the diversity of its impressive landscapes. In the north of the island, there are enchanting places with caves, cliffs, rocky islets and wonderful coves with deep transparent waters. In the south of the island, do not forget to explore Laganas Bay, an ecological paradise with calm waters, without the presence of speedboats, and with the possibility that while you are rowing calmly, next to you swims… a sea turtle!
Windsurfing
Although Zakynthos is not famous for windsurfing, there is no way that any windsurfer coming here for holidays, will not take their boat into the sea, raising their adrenaline to the top. Experts of the sport suggest as ideal for windsurfing (and kitesurfing) Tsilivi Beach, where most of the summer the winds are ideally strong. If you want to introduce yourself to the sport, you will easily find professional windsurf instructors or clubs for the equipment and lessons.
Fishing
Ideal for those who love to listen to the calm of the sea in the early morning or evening, where the gifts of the crystal and turquoise waters of the Ionian are generously given and you can enjoy the fresh and varied delicacies returning to the hotel later, proudly cooking them yourself for the your loved ones!
